May the Fourth Be With You!!

Posted by John Tackett on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, In : Ramblings
Today is May 4th, International Star Wars Day, hence the title of the post. Hard to believe that we are entering the 5th month of the year. Wow!!

Since my last post about 3 weeks ago, I have been a busy runner. I did the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon, coming in 6th for my age group with a time of 3:30:21, and then this past Saturday 05/01, I ran a 10K in College Park. My time for  was 50:04, one of my slower times, but remember I had run a marathon just 8 days earlier, so I am entitled to b...

Ode to a duck

Posted by John Tackett on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, In : Ramblings

Ever since my stay in Yosemite in the summer of 2008, I have felt a special bond with the animals that I encounter in my life. Much more so than I do with the animal known as human. And one of the things I love about my new office is the access I have to nature there. We have turtles, squirrels, geese and ducks.

I enjoy feeding the ducks and geese and just walking around the complex taking it all in. And today was no different until I meet her.

I was walking along the edge of the lake at the co...

2 down, 10 more to go!!

Posted by John Tackett on Monday, March 1, 2010, In : Ramblings
Wow! Here it is the 1st of March. Where have th first 2 months gone?

The past 2 weeks have been a busy one both at work and in my personal life. Had 5 days on testing from the 20th through the 25th. This included a couple of late night shifts and weekend work. And I have another test period coming up on the 13th.

On Friday the 26th, I did my first Atlanta Critical Mass bike ride. There were about 100 cyclists on the ride and we ended up doing a 12 mile loop through Atlanta.while we did stop for...

Straggles of my mind...

Posted by John Tackett on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, In : Ramblings
Here it is, the 10th of February and I am getting tired of the cold we have been experiencing. While we are not getting the snow the mid-Atlantic states are getting, I am constantly finding myself having to dress up like Nanook of the North when I go out for a run, bike, walk or to work. I am shorts and t-shirt kinda guy.

About 2/3 of the escalators on the MARTA system are down do to inspection issues. Want a chance to see how out of shape the citizens of Atlanta are? Watch them as they walk u...

Just some pure random thoughts...

Posted by John Tackett on Monday, February 1, 2010, In : Ramblings
Came across an article today that starting me thinking and wondering (Yes, I know that can be dangerous.) It involves your life in cyberspace. More specifically your afterlife in cyberspace. What happens to the information that exists out there after you die? What about those accounts that you may have setup and have not shared log-in information with your loved ones, especially banking or financial accounts? What about FaceBook, MySpace, Yahoo, Google, you get the idea. It is almost impossib...

I eat my candy with the pork and beans..

Posted by John Tackett on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, In : Ramblings
What?? The title of this blog is a line from the song, "Pork and Beans" by Weezer. Basically it is how I feel about conformity and uniformity in regards to my age. Check out the video on youTube when you have a chance.

At 52, going on 53 this June, most people I run across (pun intended) are shocked, surprised, curious, etc., as to why I continue to push myself. I mean, while more and more people my age are more active, it seems that society as a whole, thinks I should be getting ready for ret...

Snow Day In the A T L

Posted by John Tackett on Friday, January 8, 2010, In : Ramblings
Well today we had our first snow day of 2010. Looks like about a 1/2 inch fell to the ground an in typical Atlanta style, the locals went bonkers. 27 car pile-up on the interstate, people staying home from work, and the ever popular "lets run to the store and stock up on mike, bread and batteries." (Some weird things come to mind but that is for another post...)

Now I was not raised in snow country by any stretch of the imagination.. being a San Francisco person and all, but it constantly ...

The long and winding road called 2009...

Posted by John Tackett on Monday, December 28, 2009, In : Ramblings
As the year comes to a close in less than 4 days, I decided to reflect back on the year and look at things, both good and bad. There have been a number of events in my life this year that will be carrying on into the next year (and most likely beyond.)

The first of which is the diagnosis, of what I already believed, that my mother suffers from the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. In the beginning of the year it seemed that it was getting worse, but medical science has come up with a nu...

2 days before Christmas

Posted by John Tackett on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, In : Ramblings
Humm, if one is to believe the hype, the malls should be empty as no-one has money to spend. Apparently while they have no money, they have time to drive to the malls. My office is just a few blocks from Lenox Mall in Atlanta and the past days the traffic in and around the mall has been a madhouse. I get out of the office about 6pm each night and take a shuttle bus or walk to the Lenox MARTA station for my commute home, and I have noticed that the traffic has been bumper to bumper getting t...

Who the Hell Is John Tackett?

Self described computer geek, who works as a data analyst for a large multinational telecommunication company that has a death star like logo. When I am not at work, I can be found, running or cycling the streets of the Atlanta area. Sometimes I can be spotted at the Georgia Aquarium where I am a volunteer. And for one week out of the year, I am found at Dragon*Con, where I am the Director of Charity Events. I believe that PC stands for "personal computer" and not "politically correct" so sometimes I can say things that others don't agree with. I am an advocate for bicycling and strongly believe that the political powers in ATL are anti-bike and could not pedal their way out of a paper bag. I live with my wife in a community just south of Atlanta (but the City name starts with East, go figure) with my 2 dogs, Tiffie and QT, where the dogs and I plot the takeover of the Atlanta road infrastructure freeing it to pedestrians, runner, cyclists and dogs (on leashes of course.) And the dogs wanted me to say.. "woof, woof, bark, growl -stop for a butt sniff - woof" Apparently their dog friends will know what that means.
