Diving
Those that know me already believe I am certifiable, but this is a different type of certification... Brenda and I, as volunteers in the Dive Immersion Program (lovingly refereed to as DIP) have earned a couple of swim/dive certificates for our service at the aquarium. We have both done the swim program twice and enjoyed it, but decided that it was time to move it up a notch and do the dive. But, you have to be open water dive certified to do it.Another volunteer at the aquarium, Art Eberhart,... Continue reading ...

Running
This past weekend, along with my friend Ben Collier, and new friend Ryan Taylor, headed up to Mountain City, GA for the first SE Warrior Dash. This is a race that includes 12 obstacles; from the tire run, to a cargo net wall climb, to a mud pit and fire leap. Brenda thought I was crazy to do it, but it was just another adrenaline fix for me. The course was advertise as being 3.22 miles in length, but for whatever reasons it was shortened to 2.45 miles, but the obstacles was all there and the ... Continue reading ...

Today is May 4th, International Star Wars Day, hence the title of the post. Hard to believe that we are entering the 5th month of the year. Wow!! Since my last post about 3 weeks ago, I have been a busy runner. I did the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon, coming in 6th for my age group with a time of 3:30:21, and then this past Saturday 05/01, I ran a 10K in College Park. My time for was 50:04, one of my slower times, but remember I had run a marathon just 8 days earlier, so I am entitled to b... Continue reading ...

Ever since my stay in Yosemite in the summer of 2008, I have felt a special bond with the animals that I encounter in my life. Much more so than I do with the animal known as human. And one of the things I love about my new office is the access I have to nature there. We have turtles, squirrels, geese and ducks.
I enjoy feeding the ducks and geese and just walking around the complex taking it all in. And today was no different until I meet her.
I was walking along the edge of the lake at the co...

Wow, What a great weekend we had. Yes, it is definitely time to get out and be active. I have been doing my best to get there as well. On Saturday the 3rd of April, I participated in the Making Tracks Duathlon in Anniston, AL. Had a great time and it reminded me how much I like duathlons. This was a 5k / 10 mile / 5k event and the course was good. Being the forst event of the year it allowed me to work out any kinks and get ready for some longer distance duathlons. I finished 2nd in my age... Continue reading ...

Just got an email from a reader of my blog who asked me what was going on since I have not updated the site since 03/01.. Life is what is happening.. more specifically, work and running. So let me get started and "try" to get up to date. On the running from I did a couple of runs this past month. The first was the Silver Comet 10k on the 13th. This is always a good run to do ans the course if fairly flat and the after race support is good. I finished 143 overall (out of 845 finishers) with a t... Continue reading ...

Wow! Here it is the 1st of March. Where have th first 2 months gone? The past 2 weeks have been a busy one both at work and in my personal life. Had 5 days on testing from the 20th through the 25th. This included a couple of late night shifts and weekend work. And I have another test period coming up on the 13th. On Friday the 26th, I did my first Atlanta Critical Mass bike ride. There were about 100 cyclists on the ride and we ended up doing a 12 mile loop through Atlanta.while we did stop for... Continue reading ...

The past 2 weeks have been a busy 2 weeks with some good news on a couple of fronts. First good news is that I have been accepted for the NYC marathon on Nov. 7th of this year. Unlike the Boston, in which you must qualify, the NYC Marathon is done via a lottery system. BUT... you can skip the lottery if you pre-qualify for the event. I did that when i ran my 3h 13m marathon at Chickamauga in 2009. So Brenda and I will be heading off to the "Big Apple" later this year to run the event. I am so... Continue reading ...

Here it is, the 10th of February and I am getting tired of the cold we have been experiencing. While we are not getting the snow the mid-Atlantic states are getting, I am constantly finding myself having to dress up like Nanook of the North when I go out for a run, bike, walk or to work. I am shorts and t-shirt kinda guy. About 2/3 of the escalators on the MARTA system are down do to inspection issues. Want a chance to see how out of shape the citizens of Atlanta are? Watch them as they walk u... Continue reading ...

Came across an article today that starting me thinking and wondering (Yes, I know that can be dangerous.) It involves your life in cyberspace. More specifically your afterlife in cyberspace. What happens to the information that exists out there after you die? What about those accounts that you may have setup and have not shared log-in information with your loved ones, especially banking or financial accounts? What about FaceBook, MySpace, Yahoo, Google, you get the idea. It is almost impossib... Continue reading ...

What?? The title of this blog is a line from the song, "Pork and Beans" by Weezer. Basically it is how I feel about conformity and uniformity in regards to my age. Check out the video on youTube when you have a chance. At 52, going on 53 this June, most people I run across (pun intended) are shocked, surprised, curious, etc., as to why I continue to push myself. I mean, while more and more people my age are more active, it seems that society as a whole, thinks I should be getting ready for ret... Continue reading ...

"The
bicycle is the most civilized conveyance known to man. Other forms of
transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure
in heart. " ~ Iris Murdoch, The Red and the Green
Think about this for a minute.. The bike is the most civilized conveyance known to man.. When I ride my bike it take on a different attitude then when I was just a motorists. I would think that I was indestructible in my auto and that the roads existed strictly for me. But as I started to ride, I beca... Continue reading ...

Running
Just a quick post for today 01/12/2010. 12 days into the new year already and I have logged 62 miles of running (that's 5 miles a day for you mathematically challenged.) I am off to the best start ever for a year or a month in regards to my running. And the funny thing is.. I don't see any problems or feel any extra pains with the extra running. I think the major reason for that is I have decided that in 2010, I am just going to enjoy the events I do. No trying to qualify for this marathon, or... Continue reading ...

Well today we had our first snow day of 2010. Looks like about a 1/2 inch fell to the ground an in typical Atlanta style, the locals went bonkers. 27 car pile-up on the interstate, people staying home from work, and the ever popular "lets run to the store and stock up on mike, bread and batteries." (Some weird things come to mind but that is for another post...) Now I was not raised in snow country by any stretch of the imagination.. being a San Francisco person and all, but it constantly ... I am a person who likes to ride bicycles. I am a confident road users
who pose very little danger to others, and only rarely am I seriously hurt myself. I am confident in my cycling skills and predictable in my cycling habits. I wear a helmet
because they are a form of cheap insurance to protect against the rare head
injury (and to keep my wife happy), but I don’t get too worked up if others don’t wear them, it is an individual choice. I am a healthy and positive-minded individual becaus... Continue reading ...

As the year comes to a close in less than 4 days, I decided to reflect back on the year and look at things, both good and bad. There have been a number of events in my life this year that will be carrying on into the next year (and most likely beyond.) The first of which is the diagnosis, of what I already believed, that my mother suffers from the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. In the beginning of the year it seemed that it was getting worse, but medical science has come up with a nu... Continue reading ...
